TENMYOUYA Hisashi "Fighting Spirit"(TOKYO)

15 October - 15 November 2008

Mizuma Art Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition “Fighting Spirit” by TENMYOUYA Hisashi. The show will be on the 2nd and 5th floor space.

The artist is known for a series of works that satirizes the state of contemporary society by using methods and elements from Japanese traditional art. He has been focused on the origin and developmental process of traditional techniques and thoughts, and presents them into our age with a hint of irony. Such consistent stance can be one element which compels our interest as well as his artworks. In recent years, apart from domestic and international exhibitions, his activities spread beyond white cubes, that contain creating FIFA world cup official art poster, designing tattoo for MATSUMOTO Hitoshi film “Dainipponjin”, and contributing artworks for serial novel on Nikkei-Shinbun (Japan Economic Times), also the artist will participate in Official Art Edition 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics” in 2009.

For this show, he will present eight new pieces including his largest-ever painting in 3 meters long.

On the fifth floor, a series of artworks for a novel by KITAKATA Kenzo on Nikkei-Shinbun, started from Aug 6th 2007, will be shown. More than 400 sheets of works will be exhibited in a traditional or rather fresh format where Tenmyouya captures subtle moves and emotions behind the characters. The audience will enjoy his sensitive brushstroke drew by sumi ink on Japanese paper.

The works by Tenmyouya are born from the combination of Japanese traditional and unique aesthetics and the artist’s solid attitude. There seems to be a calm in his new works, just like before a storm. We hope you to view them in detail with your own eyes.
