Albert Yonathan’s first solo museum show in Japan, “TERRENE”, will open at POLA Museum Annex, Ginza, on Saturday 7th October.
Yonathan’s practice has been highly acclaimed for his focussed exploration of the potentialities of the ceramic medium, working without any use of pre-formed models to create each piece from clay by hand. This exhibition comprises 11 pieces, focussing upon ceramic floor-based installation works and also including film and drawings, as well as works that form part of the artist’s ongoing creative projects.
The title “TERRENE” originates in the Latin word for “earth” (terra), and refers to something that is both of the earth or like the earth. According to Yonathan, one of the central focuses of the exhibition is “to explore the tensions between materiality and immateriality, the secular and the spiritual.”
