About Echoes of Crossroads:
Once a venue for weddings at a long-established hotel, the Chapel of the Wind has witnessed many families’ special days. Now, it exists in a state of serene stillness, as if frozen in time. Miyanaga Aiko observed the passage of time within this church meticulously, researching the people, places, and events surrounding the view from the church’s location on Mt. Rokko. Her research included artificial islands resembling Lego blocks, conveyor belt paths transporting mountain soil to reclaimed lands, activities of people in this area once known as a trading port, and the memories of the earthquake that persist in the land and its people.
The artist compared these traces that shaped present-day Kobe to roads not found on maps, and considered the Chapel of the Wind as a “crossroads” where these roads intersect. The historical and contemporary elements gathered through research are delicately and subtly arranged within the church as fragments. By carefully collecting and unraveling these elements, viewers can quietly and infinitely expand their thoughts from their own points of reference.
